SARKIS  HATSPANIAN

Sarkis Hatspanian was born in 1962 in Alexandrette (Iskenderoun). He has one brother and three sisters. Six years after moving to Constantinople. He was educated in Istanbul by Karageozian and St. Khach Tbrevangk schools. Since childhood he has published articles in both Armenian and Turkish languages, about the sufferings of the Armenians living in Turkey and especially about the Armenian Genocide. Having learned that the government was going to persecute him, he immediately moved to Germany and later went to France to study at the University of Sorbonne, receiving his higher education in cinematography.

Sarkis has participated in the Armenian liberation movement in the student circle. He has attracted a special attention in all public events. Sarkis is fluent in four languages: Armenian, Turkish, French and German.

In 1990, he moved to Armenia where he participated in the liberation struggle of Artsakh by serving with Lionit Azalian as a soldier or war correspondent. He is also one of the few rare individuals linking the Diaspora to Armenia and is convinced by his colloquy that the Armenians of Europe and America support the army and generally Armenia and Artsakh.

In 1992, the idea of establishing the Friends of Armenia was inspired by Varujan Karyan and Hatspanian served as a representative of Friends of Armenia  for 8 years as a volunteer. Through the year when Sarkis was an active member, Friends of Armenia, has been implemented many plans the first of which is the school named after Varujan Karyan of Gusapat village in Artsakh.

In 1995, he was married to Hasmik Poghosyan, and had with two daughters, Maryam and Nairi.

As a result of his political rumors in 2008, he was imprisoned for 3 years by the decision of the Armenian authorities.

Sarkis’ activities are beneficial to the Armenian nation and the homeland. He is not a historian, but he has studied Armenian history well. He has completed many translations from Turkish to Armenian and has published many articles in the Armenian press. He is one of the familiar television faces and has participated in a variety of collaborative and public debates about important issues.

Sarkis Hatspanian was a friend of Hrant Dink and the representative of his ties in Armenia. Sarkis is one of the best sons of the Armenian Nation.
