ACA Weekly Update – 3/20/2021

37 US Senators Call on President Biden to Recognize Armenian Genocide

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today led 37 of his Senate colleagues in requesting the Biden administration join the U.S. Congress in officially recognizing the Ottoman Empire’s genocide against the Armenian people. To date, no U.S. president has made it U.S. policy to affirm the historical facts of the Armenian Genocide, which lasted from 1915 to 1923 and resulted in the forced deportation of around 2 million Armenians, 1.5 million of whom were brutally killed.

We join the Armenian community in the United States and around the world in honoring the memory of these victims, and we stand firmly against attempts to pretend that this intentional, organized effort to destroy the Armenian people was anything other than a genocide,” the Senators wrote in a letter to President Biden. “You have correctly stated that American diplomacy and foreign policy must be rooted in our values, including respect for universal rights. Those values require us to acknowledge the truth and do what we can to prevent future genocides and other crimes against humanity.” Read more…

Azerbaijan Destroying and Falsifying Historical Facts of Armenian Monuments in Occupied Territories of Artsakh

YEREVAN — The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on the international community, particularly UNESCO, to intervene to save the monuments in Azerbajani-occupied territories of Artsakh that have not yet been destroyed becomes urgent.

The call comes after the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev visited the occupied territories of the Republic of Artsakh, in particular, the Hadrut region and the city of Shushi, which fell under the Azerbaijani control as a result of the aggression carried out with the direct participation of Turkey and the foreign terrorists fighters.

Throughout the war, the Azerbaijani armed forces committed mass atrocities, including ethnic cleansing and war crimes against the Armenians of Artsakh, in blatant violation of international humanitarian law. Read more…

Armenian Caucus Co-Chairs Introduce Resolution Urging Azerbaijan to Release All Prisoners of War

Washington D.C. – Today, the bipartisan co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, U.S. Representatives Adam Schiff (D-CA), Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Frank Pallone (D-NJ), David G. Valadao (R-CA), and Jackie Speier (D-CA) introduced a resolution calling on Azerbaijan to immediately release all prisoners of war (POWs) and civilians currently detained in the aftermath of the 2020 war in Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Artsakh. The resolution was cosponsored by a bipartisan group of 31 Members.

Public reports indicate that as many as 200 Armenian detainees remain in Azerbaijani custody. Under the Geneva Conventions and the November 9, 2020 tripartite statement signed by Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan, all parties have an obligation to release prisoners. Armenia has fulfilled this obligation, while the Government of Azerbaijan continues to misrepresent the status of these POWs in an attempt to justify their continued captivity. The resolution also calls on the U.S. State Department to engage with Azerbaijani authorities, including through the OSCE Minsk Group, to demand the immediate release of POWs and captured civilians. Read more…

mainly use banned white phosphorus weapons.
Within the framework of the fact-finding mission of the Artsakh Human
Rights Ombudsman, it was revealed that the deliberate burning of the
forests of Artsakh by the Azerbaijani side is widespread and covers all
regions. According to preliminary data, 1815 hectares of forest area
have already been burned, but fires continue in various areas, and there
is a tendency for rapid growth.
Given the size and geographical coverage of the burned forests, the
population of the Artsakh Republic is facing an environmental
catastrophe, which undermines the environmental security in the region
and contains long-term dangerous consequences for the life and health of
the people of Artsakh. Moreover, the Azerbaijani armed forces, with
these criminal methods, intend to harm the civilian population sheltered
in the forests.
The Ombudsman emphasizes that the deliberate burning of the forests by
the Azerbaijani armed forces is a war crime and calls on the
international community to take practical steps to condemn the
Azerbaijani crimes and punish those responsible.

Remarks by Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, Minister of Foriegn Affairs of Armenia on the 130th Session Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe
Mr. President,
I join in the commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the signature of the European Convention on Human Rights – a cornerstone treaty in protecting rights and freedoms of hundreds of millions of Europeans. We share the vision of the Council of Europe that the Convention shall cover all Europeans, notwithstanding the status of the territory they live in. Sadly, it is not the case…

The hostile force used phosphorous munitions containing elements of chemical weapons in the Artsakh-Azerbaijani conflict zone, which is a gross violation of International Humanitarian Law, norms, and principles of Customary Law, Geneva Conventions, as well as the provisions of the relevant UN conventions and documents. Apart from the intent to inflict damage on the Armenian forces, the enemy also aims to cause massive forest fires and create real environmental disaster hazards in the area. Prohibition of the above-mentioned actions and the concomitant rights and values rest primarily in the realm of customary law…

“We have the most powerful weapon: ourselves and our unity.” Address by Armen Sarkissian, President of the Republic of Armenia, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund
“By winning this war, defending our homeland, and not allowing another genocide to be carried out, we will finally understand the power of the Diaspora, which includes the friends of Armenia and the Armenians as well. “We have the support of our true friends who are not Armenians, but share human values with us. In our case, our victory in this war is not aggression, not occupying the land of others, it is the defense of our and your home.
Help us to defend our history, our culture, our faith and our heritage.”
For about two days now, the fighting around Shushi has not stopped. Tonight, last night, quite heavy and intense battles took place in the settlements around Shushi, on the roads leading to Shushi, near Shushi.
If May 8, 1992 was marked in the Armenian history as the day of the liberation of Shushi, then these passing days will enter as brilliant days of the defense of Shushi.
The “Gyorbagyor” military operation to destroy the opponent’s reconnaissance and sabotage tactical groups, mercenaries and bandits continues successfully.
At the moment, the fighting is going on, but the strength has significantly weakened. On other fronts, relatively weak actions generally take place.

The documentary “The Hydra of Terrorism” talks about the new hotbed of terrorists set up in Azerbaijan. Jihadists from Syria, Lybia and Pakistan are transferred here to engage in the war against the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh. In Azerbaijan itself bases and camps are also set up to transfer terrorists to different regions as well. Over the past month they were already discovered in Russia. Today Turkey is the center that sponsors, arms, trains and transfers militant mercenaries. Facts, evidence and testimonies of the terrorists themselves are presented in the documentary film “The Hydra of Terrorism”.
We as System Of A Down have just released new music for the first time in 15 years. The time to do this is now, as together, the four of us have something extremely important to say as a unified voice. These two songs, “Protect The Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” both speak of a dire and serious war being perpetrated upon our cultural homelands of Artsakh and Armenia.
The current corrupt regimes of Aliyev in Azerbaijan and Erdogan in Turkey not only want to claim Artsakh and Armenia as their own, but are committing genocidal acts with impunity on humanity and wildlife to achieve their mission. They are banking on the world being too distracted with COVID, elections and civil unrest to call out their atrocities….
